The Barrier Methods & Contraception Programme supports and strengthens the reproductive health services through research, training, policy development, development of information and education materials, networking and provision of technical assistance on contraception and barrier methods in the KwaZulu-Natal region, within South Africa and internationally. RHRU’s Contraception and Barrier Methods team of 8 core staff has also taken an opportunity to integrate many of its programmes into HIV related sites, such as those dealing with voluntary counselling and testing, prevention of mother to child transmission, antiretroviral treatment and treatment of sexually transmitted infections, while carrying on the regular research on innovative barrier methods and contraception it has been pursuing since 1994.
