RHRU is a WHO collaborating centre

Who We Are

RHRU started with five staff members working out of four small offices in Johannesburg. In 2006, after just over a decade, nearly 200 people are working on almost 50 research and training programmes between Johannesburg to Durban in a range of sites and offices. As the unit evolved, so did its structure, reflecting RHRU's activities in the different areas of sexual & reproductive health and HIV.

The RHRU team consists of a range of Scientists, Clinicians, Senior Researchers, Technical Advisors, Business specialists, Administrators and a general core team of support based roles.

The RHRU ManagementTeam

Through various permutations, during 2006 RHRU settled into two distinct clusters, a regional office in Durban and centralised services through the National Office in Johannesburg.  The clusters and regional office deliver various projects from multiple sites: HIV management, research on sexually transmitted infections and HIV, barriers and contraceptives, maternal health and adolescent health. Each cluster is headed by a technical specialist, and all cluster teams are supported by an Organisational Development Specialist and a central support service department.  The Executive Director, Professor Helen Rees, provides strategic guidance and technical advice to all projects within the unit and the unit is supported by a National Executive team which consists of:  Prof Helen Rees, Mags Beksinska, Maxine McCalla-Kay, Dr Francois Venter and Dr Sinead Delany-Moretlwe.

Since 2002, RHRU headquarters have been operating from Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, a teaching hospital of the University of the Witwatersrand and known as the largest hospital in the world. In 2007 the unit hopes to complete its expansion plans to relocate its head office functions to the Hillbrow Health Precinct based in Hillbrow, Johannesburg.  The Hillbrow Health Precinct represents the central core project activity of the unit.  The site presence at Bara will remain due to project growth requirements in that location, in particular for the STI/HIV Research cluster.  RHRU also runs research and intervention sites at Esselen Street clinic and Johannesburg Hospital (both in inner-city Johannesburg), Yeoville, Orange Farm and Soweto. The Durban regional office has been operational since 1999.

RHRU is an official research unit of the University of Witwatersrand Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and in 2002 was awarded the status of World Health Organisation (WHO) Collaborating Centre
